Gåsgruvan has a long history, with limestone extraction starting in 1852. In the mid-1950s, two horizontal rotary kilns were built for burning limestone.
SMA Mineral acquired Gåsgruvan from Uddeholm in 1980. Until 1990, lime was burned in Gåsgruvan and extraction took place at two underground levels.
Today, limestone is extracted from an open pit. The limestone and side rock are crushed at different levels in the quarry using a mobile crusher and a sorting plant placed at blasted rock. The products are then continuously transported up to the industrial area for storage on stockpiles or in storage tents before loading. The ground product is stored in silos or large sacks and delivered to customers in the construction industry, asphalt production, agriculture, or lake liming.
