Applications

Without us always being aware of it, the carbonate minerals, limestone and dolomite, form the foundation for much of what is around us. A lot of what we take for granted in society simply would not work without lime. At SMA Mineral, we often encounter and welcome new ideas regarding applications of our valuable raw material.

Lime and dolomite can be used for many purposes. The iron and steel industries are major consumers, as well as the pulp and paper industries. Lime is also a vital component in asphalt and cement, making it important for our infrastructure.

In terms of the environment, lime is used to combat acidification of watercourses and farmland, as well as to purify water and air. Lakes are treated with lime to restore a natural pH value, preserve biodiversity, and prevent acidification damage to plant and animal life. Agricultural land is enriched with lime to balance acidic deposition and improve soil properties.

In water treatment, lime is used as a pH raiser to adjust the hardness of water, but also to minimize the presence of harmful substances in drinking water. Lime products can also be used for flue gas purification, where the reactivity and high purity of lime help reduce emissions of heavy metals and acidifying substances.
