Dolomite is the name of a carbonate rock composed of the mineral dolomite.
The rock is closely related to limestone and forms when limestone undergoes a process called dolomitization. During dolomitization, some of the calcium ions in the limestone are replaced by magnesium ions. The chemical formula for dolomite is CaMg(CO3)2.
Like limestone, dolomite occurs both as sedimentary and crystalline. In Sweden, no sedimentary dolomite deposits are known. All Swedish dolomite is crystalline and is also very old (about one billion years). In Norway, a younger crystalline dolomite is found in the mountain bedrock, and in Estonia and Latvia, there are sedimentary dolomites of the same age as the limestone from Gotland.
Dolomite is extracted, crushed, and ground into suitable fractions at our production facilities and, like limestone, can then be further processed into calcined dolomite.
Due to its high magnesium content, dolomite is commonly used in agriculture. It is also frequently used in the iron and steel industry as well as a filler in the paint and plastics industries.
