Lime is used in water treatment to neutralize acids, raise the pH level, and remove unwanted substances that may be present in the water.
Lime, often in the form of calcium carbonate or calcium hydroxide, is added to raise the pH in acidic water. The lime makes the water neutral or weakly alkaline.
Lime can also be used for the precipitation of pollutants. It can bind to dissolved substances—such as phosphorus, heavy metals, or other contaminants—and form insoluble compounds that precipitate out and can be removed from the water.
Lime products, through their pH-raising effect, can also help reduce corrosion in pipes and other equipment within water supply systems.
SMA Mineral has developed specialized products for water treatment within the Envira family.
