SMA Mineral - A world full of lime

Landfill and Leachate

Lime is used to manage and stabilize waste areas, particularly landfills containing hazardous or acidic substances. The lime reduces the risks of pollution and leakage of landfill gases, contributing to improved environmental protection.

In Sweden, there are a large number of landfills that, according to EU regulations, must be capped in the coming years. In total, these landfills cover thousands of hectares.

Lime has the necessary properties for pH adjustment, stabilization, drainage, and filtration of landfill materials.

The Benefits of Lime

In landfills, organic material can decompose anaerobically (without oxygen) and produce landfill gas, which includes methane and carbon dioxide. While these gases are not dangerous in themselves, in some cases, an acidic environment can form in the landfill, producing sulfuric acid and other organic acids. Lime is added to neutralize these acids and raise the pH level in the landfill gas and leachate.

Landfills can leak pollutants into the soil and groundwater, leading to severe environmental problems. By adding lime, the stability of the landfill improves, reducing the risk of leakage of heavy metals (such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic).

Lime’s stabilizing properties also help bind landfill soil and waste materials, reducing the risk of erosion or collapse.

SMA Mineral offers a range of products designed for landfills. We also provide lime products for geological barriers and base layers in the construction of new landfills.
