In crop production, lime is used to improve soil pH, nutrient uptake, and structure.
Lime raises the pH in acidic soils, allowing plants to better absorb nutrients such as phosphorus and potassium. Lime also contains calcium, which is important for plant cell walls and root growth. Proper lime application also helps bind growth-inhibiting aluminum in the soil.
Lime also improves drainage, aeration, and water retention, which benefits the growth of plant roots. In soils with high base saturation, the need for fertilizers, nitrogen, and phosphorus is reduced by up to ten percent, resulting in significant economic benefits.
