In metal extraction, lime is used to form slag. Lime reacts with impurities in the ore and creates a slag that can be separated from the molten metal. By removing these impurities, brittleness is reduced, and the quality of the extracted metal is improved.
In certain mines, particularly those extracting ores containing sulfur, lime is used to neutralize sulfuric acid (H2SO4) formed during the process. Sulfuric acid is a byproduct from certain ores and can be corrosive and harmful to the environment if not properly handled.
Lime reacts with sulfuric acid to form calcium sulfate (CaSO4), which is less harmful and can be removed from the process.
Mining, which uses large amounts of water to process ore and wash away sediments, requires efficient management of water waste and pollutants. Lime is used to neutralize acids and treat and purify mine wastewater.
Lime is also used to improve the stability and safety of mining waste disposal. Lime is added to stabilize waste materials to prevent harmful substances from leaking into the surrounding environment.
