SMA Mineral - A world full of lime

Markets

Lime and other carbonates have been a part of civilization for thousands of years. In various forms, lime has been essential for the development of humanity and for improving our quality of life. Today, we have a wide range of stone products that are marketed and distributed to customers across Northern Europe.

Products

Our business idea is to refine stone materials, primarily carbonate stone, into mineral products tailored to meet our customers' requirements. In terms of product types, our volumes are distributed as follows.

Countries

SMA Mineral is one of the key players in the Northern European lime market. A large portion of our volumes are dedicated to Sweden and Finland, but our lime is also found in Norway and Estonia.

Industry

Industry requires lime products to optimize both the quality of the final product and the lifespan of production equipment.

Steel production requires lime to remove impurities, as well as to form slag that protects the steel from oxidation. The paper and cellulose industry needs quicklime in their sulfate processes.

The mining industry requires lime for pH regulation, as well as for stabilization, drainage, backfilling, and filtration.

Environment

Lime and dolomite are often used to reduce the negative impact on our environment.

Lakes are limed to restore a natural pH level and prevent acidification damage to plant and animal life. Agricultural land is enriched with lime to balance acidic fallout and improve soil properties.

Water treatment plants use lime to adjust water hardness and minimize the risk of harmful substances in drinking water. Combined heat and power plants, as well as industries, use lime products for flue gas cleaning.

Infrastructure

Lime is indirectly an important ingredient in a functioning infrastructure.

Our roads are paved with asphalt, where lime is used as a filler material and as an adhesive to bind bitumen to the aggregate. Lime-based stabilizing materials are used for soil stabilization, making it possible to build houses and roads even in challenging soil conditions.

The construction industry uses lime products in cement and concrete, as well as for the production of roofing felt.

Agriculture

In modern agriculture, lime is used to balance the soil's pH level and improve the conditions for good yields.

With structural liming, soil structure is improved in clay soils, thereby enhancing the soil's ability to absorb nutrients and water.

Lime is also a natural component of animal feed to meet the animals' nutritional needs.
