Pollution from air and precipitation can cause the soil to become acidic. By adding lime, the pH level is raised, and the acids in the soil are neutralized. With the right pH balance, the soil’s chemical and biological properties are improved, making it more suitable for plant growth and microbial activity.
Due to its alkaline nature, lime can also bind heavy metals (such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, and chromium) and convert them into insoluble compounds that are less harmful and less mobile in the soil. This reduces the risk of heavy metals leaching into groundwater or being taken up by plants.
Example: Lime can convert soluble and toxic metals into solid forms such as calcium sulfate or calcium phosphate, making them less biologically available.
Lime also improves the physical properties of the soil by making it more aerated, which enhances oxygen and water flow within the soil. This is particularly useful for improving soil structure during the remediation of contaminated land.
By raising the pH, lime can also reduce the toxicity from certain pollutants, such as acidic substances and volatile organic compounds. Lime promotes microbial activity, which helps break down organic pollutants in the soil.
