SMA Mineral - A world full of lime

EDP-verification – an important step in our sustainability work

Through the initiation of environmental product declarations (EPDs), SMA Mineral has taken a significant step in its sustainability efforts. The project, which began in Loukolampi, Finland, marks the start of a broader initiative where EPDs will be implemented throughout the entire organization.

An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is an environmental documentation that provides a transparent and detailed account of a product’s environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle. The declaration is based on data verified by a third party, offering clear and comparable information about the product’s environmental performance.

The purpose of EPDs is to meet customers’ needs for documentation proving that our products comply with applicable legal requirements.

Loukolampi – The Natural Choice

Our facility in Loukolampi has experienced an increasing demand for transparency regarding the carbon footprint of its products. Many of the facility’s products are used in the construction industry, which in recent years has intensified its efforts toward a green transition. These requirements are further reinforced by a new Finnish regulation that came into effect on January 1, 2025, emphasizing suppliers’ obligation to disclose climate impact when selling construction products.

Annika Niiranen, HSEQ Manager in Finland, explains:

“The increasing requirements for reporting the environmental impact of products make Loukolampi the obvious choice for initiating the EPD process. Additionally, many of the facility’s products have a simple composition, which facilitates the process of creating the declarations.”

Progress in the Project

The project started in October 2024 and has already made significant progress. We have gathered the initial data needed to create an EPD, which has now been sent to an external consultant for further analysis. The consultant will conduct life cycle assessments (LCA) and compile the declarations in accordance with international standards such as EN 15804 and ISO 14025.

By the end of January 2025, the preliminary declarations are expected to be reviewed together with the consultant. Any necessary adjustments will then be made before the declarations can finally be verified by an independent third party.

The Road Ahead

Once the Loukolampi project is completed, the EPD process will begin for our other production facilities in Finland. In the long term, the goal is to ensure environmentally friendly processes across the entire organization.

The EPD work provides us with an independent assessment and verification that our products meet market and regulatory requirements. By ensuring accurate information and increased transparency, we can provide customers and other stakeholders with better decision-making support while strengthening our position as a serious and responsible industry player.
