SMA Mineral - A world full of lime

Quartz

Quartz (SiO2) is a fine-grained metamorphic rock transformed from sandstone.

What is Quartz?

Quartz is one of the most common minerals in the Earth’s crust. It is a hard and durable material used in a range of industrial and commercial applications.

Quartz consists of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and is made up of silicon dioxide atoms that are bound together in a crystal lattice.

At SMA Mineral, quartz is extracted and crushed into suitable fractions at our facility in Ristimaa, Finland.

Uses

The hardness and chemically stable properties of quartz make it useful in many areas. Quartz is used in construction and civil engineering, as well as in electronics and jewelry manufacturing. It is also an important source of silicon dioxide, which is utilized in several industrial applications.

The quartz extracted in Ristimaa is mainly used in the steel industry in their chrome furnaces. Quartz can sometimes also be used as a road paving material and in refractory materials.
